My swedish housemate Clara explained (spelling mistakes are mine) that "dans BARNan" means "dance barn" but "dans baNAN" means "dance banana"; the main difference is which syllable you stress. I knew there was some pun along these lines but I didn't realise it was monolingual. Last night I went to the Herräng Film Festival. There were four short films. The first was "Herräng week 1", made on site. It definitely included footage from week 2, including our slow dance class with Daniel and Åsa, and including Marie identifying crisp flavours in the daily meeting, but I kept my mouth shut. The second was Nickolas Lloyd's film from a few years ago about doing things for 24 hours. The third was mis-captioned "Oy expressed through movement" (it was meant to be "Joy") and was an electro-swing dance video filmed in various scenic locations in the US. I voted for that one. The fourth was a mock trailer for a horror film called "The Creeper", featuring the man you don't want to dance with. All good fun. Also last night was a Burlesque show. Kevin and Mikey were the hosts, and Jo and Sharon were among the performers, but the show was stolen by Sharon's friend and colleague Hayley. Most of the men I spoke to thought the show was great but felt too embarrassed to woop correctly. Most of the women said something about it being sufficiently artistic. None of us was nearly drunk enough. Then I stayed up dancing until 7:30am, at which time there were still a few dozen people on the floor, with an excess of leads. Everybody seemed very tired, but I still got some memorable dances and lots of good practice. I'm now feeling much more comfortable in this crowd; not special in any way, but not wasting people's time either. The beef stew at 3am helped, and I seem to get more dances if I remember to shave. If those are important factors then nothing is seriously wrong. My attempts at following this week have mostly been disappointing. I'm sure I'm better at following than most men, but people seem to prefer me to lead, especially women, and especially for Lindy Hop. I have nonetheless had a few good dances and some practice. Sarah didn't show up to revise lessons with me today. I assume she had a better offer. :-) We've covered most of last week already, so it's no big deal. In particular we managed to get Michael and Evita's choreography to work, which I'm pleased about. Sarah could have applied for Advanced, in my opinion.
