I got into the lower group again (grr) but it is much better than in week 3 (yay). I got into group 3 of 4 in the peer audition, which was my strength last time, and nothing changed in the teacher audition. I didn't mess too many moves up with any partner, so my practice had had an effect. I don't think I was particularly more timid or boring than last time. It's just that everybody else was better. The first two lessons were with Daniel and Åsa. They did "warm ups" in which they did lots of body movements as inspiration for later, and told us not to worry about copying exactly, which was refreshing. Their general idea was for us to do easy moves and focus on the musicality and styling. They made us sing along to the music so we couldn't temporarily drop it. Brilliant. They also focused on unled stuff: doing footwork and styling variations that are potentially different from my partner's. This is an area I need to work on, I think. The third lesson was with Andy and Nina whom I had not seen before. Nina did most of the talking. Again, their focus was on peripheral stuff: in their case and alternative to the traditional Lindy posture. I found them difficult to understand. I could not focus on the point they were making because I spent the whole time learning unfamiliar moves. They also went a bit too fast for the class. I failed to bite my tongue, and went up to Andy afterwards. Impressively, he found me after supper to talk some more. I think he was pleased that I didn't just grumble about which group I'm in. So I've learnt one thing. :-) I spent a bit of today trying to work out what the guys in group 1 are doing that I'm not. Some of their moves are a bit fancier, and they manage them without messing up, so perhaps I should start learning more moves again. Their connection and leading is generally not as good as mine; I don't need to work more on that. Their styling is better; the stuff in today's lessons is stuff I need. I didn't really see anybody explicitly leading complicated footwork of the sort I have been practising, so maybe I should give that a rest. Nor did I see many fancy rhythm variations. Not at all what I expected. Interesting. One thing was as expected: many more smiles among the good dancers.
